How to Choose a Live Band for Your Kingston Wedding

River Cats performing at a wedding reception in Kingston Ontario

Your wedding band sets the tone for the entire reception. Pick the wrong one and you get background noise. Pick the right one and your guests are on the floor all night. Here is how to make the right call.

Genre Range Matters

Your guest list probably spans three generations. A band that only plays one genre will lose part of the room. Look for a band that covers enough ground to keep everyone engaged. River Cats play pop, rock, funk, and country, which means your parents, your friends, and your coworkers all hear songs they want to dance to.

Ask About the Setlist Process

Good wedding bands let you customize the setlist. You should be able to request specific songs for key moments like the first dance, parent dances, and the last song of the night. You should also be able to flag songs you do not want played.

Check Their Live Sound

Studio recordings and live performance are two different things. Before booking, watch live video of the band performing. Better yet, go see them at a show. You are hiring them for what they sound like in a room, not what they sound like in a recording.

Venue Compatibility

Some venues have noise restrictions, load-in limitations, or their own sound systems. A band that has played weddings before knows how to navigate this. Ask whether they bring their own PA and whether they can scale their volume to match the space.

Communication and Reliability

The band should respond to emails within a day or two. They should arrive on time, set up without disrupting the event, and coordinate with your DJ, MC, or planner. This is not the night for surprises.

Booking Timeline

Popular wedding dates in Eastern Ontario book 6-12 months out. If you have a summer Saturday locked in, start looking for your band early. The good ones fill up.
