Every band has an origin story. Most of them are less glamorous than they sound. Ours started the way a lot of good things in Kingston do, with a few people who could not stop talking about music finally deciding to do something about it.
We came from different corners of the local scene. Some of us had done the bar circuit for years, some had been writing quietly at home, and one of us mostly wanted an excuse to play louder. When we got in a room together, it clicked faster than any of us expected.
The name came before the songs did, honestly. River Cats felt right for a band from a city built on the water, a little scrappy, a little smooth, comfortable playing anywhere from a patio to a packed room.
Those first rehearsals were a mess in the best way. We threw rock, funk, country, and pop at the wall and kept whatever made us grin. That mix is still the core of what we do, and it is why our members can cover so much ground in one night.
We did not have a single show booked yet. What we had was a setlist coming together, a sound we believed in, and a plan to become the kind of live band Kingston could count on for a good night.
